The VIY (Volunteer It Yourself) programme, created and managed by CoSpA in partnership with London Youth, has been shortlisted in two categories for this year’s Corporate Engagement Awards: ’Best collaborative approach’ and ‘Best community involvement in a sponsorship activity”.

The winners will be announced on 18th September.

VIY challenges young people aged 14-17 to learn building and construction skills on the job by committing to fix local youth club buildings in need of essential repairs.

The young volunteers are mentored by professional tradespeople and gain vocational accreditations as well as access to further training, work placement and apprenticeship opportunities with local employers beyond the project.

VIY was successfully piloted with two club buildings in south London in 2011 and is now being rolled out in 47 locations across the UK over two years, involving 2,000 young people and 200 trade skills mentors.

The national roll-out of VIY is enabled by CoSpA and London Youth in partnership with The Big Lottery Fund, Wickes and City & Guilds.
